- God provided water from a rock
- Ex 17:3-6 — Moses struck the rock
- Num 20:2-13 — Moses struck the rock when told to speak to it.
- This theme of God providing water from a rock is taken up in the songs of Israel:
- Ps 78:15,16 [He brought streams out of the rock... rivers...]
- Ps 105:41 [...opened rock and waters gushed out...]
- it was like a symbol of freedom, of new life
- The Apostle Paul says that this rock was a picture of Christ
- 1 Cor 10:4b “For they were all drinking from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.”
- Then the idea is picked up by the prophets: there will be a new Exodus
- Isaiah 48:20,21 from Babylon
- Joel 3:18 rivers of water
- Then look at Joel 2:28…

- But Jesus is the one who was lifted up
- (Ez 43:1-5 glory filled the temple as the waters… 47:1-6, 12 rivers flowing)
- Come to ME
- I will lead you out of slavery
Isa 55:1-2 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
Rev 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.
